Nutritional Learning

There is no doubt that children learn best when they have healthy bodies and brains. The research has shown time and time again that by giving children the diet and opportunities for exercise that their body needs, their academic achievement will improve. I have noticed that children many times do not eat the school lunches that are provided and choose not to exercise when given the opportunity. Obesity in this country is increasing at an earlier age and at an alarming rate. What can we do to encourage our youth to change their habits and become more fit human beings?

I teach first grade, and I have students who show up with $1 everyday to buy chips with their lunch. What happens is that the lunch lady makes sure that the children have the appropriate food on their plates before they are allowed to buy snacks. Well of course when I am walking out of the lunch room the kids are eating their snacks, while the hot food is sitting on their plates untouched. Why do we even need to serve snacks in the lunchroom. When I asked this question of course, the district makes money of chip sales, ice cream sales, so why should they do aware with all the extras?

I know that in my school, a middle school, students are allowed to choose from the hot plate lunch or the snack bar. The snack bar consists of pizza, nachos, and the like. The hot plate really isn't much better, with choices like stuffed baked potato served WITH french fries.

Very sad
